Giclée Photographic Prints
Giclée (zhee-KLAY) prints are high quality inkjet produced photographic prints. The giclée prints here are produced by an expert shop on top of the line printers using wide-gamut aqueous pigment inks on museum-grade paper/cotton. These pigments are more resistant to light and fading than dye-based inks.
Advantages of this process are extreme color fidelity, larger size options, and textures. The printers utilize up to 10 base pigments (compared to 3 in a traditional chromogenic-type) achieving a wider color gamut than traditional photographic prints. By utilizing ultra-precise inkjet heads these result in exceptional detail rendering, and by removing limitations from projection, larger prints are possible as well, limited only by the size of the printer.
Different varieties of cotton rag also allow for different texture appearances of the print, allowing for diverse options in presentation. Premium options include Torchon, Aquarelle Rag, Photo Rag Baryta, and Photo Rag Metallic— described below.
These museum-grade photo paper and rags (cotton paper) are some of the best in the industry in longevity, texture, and color reproduction. All are recommended to be displayed framed under glass as they are touch and abrasion sensitive.
Papers and Rags
-
Coming from the French for “coarse structure”, Torchon has a distinct parchment texture and is made from 100% α-cellulose paper. From renowned the German paper company Hahnemühle (dating back to 1584), it is incredibly bright white, allowing for excellent color depth and definition. 285 gsm. Despite containing optical brighteners, in gallery lighting conditions it has an expected longevity of 50-80 years at original quality. In reviews it is noted for its vibrant colors and excellent grey scale neutrality and shadow tonal separation.
Best for: warm colors and black and white prints with complementary texture profiles -
Carson Infinity Aquarelle rag, drawing its name from its use in watercolor, meets the highest archival standards for longevity, using no optical brighteners (which can degrade paper quality over time) and meets ISO 9706 standard to resist gas fading. 310gsm.
The natural white displays excellent color and deep blacks with a medium felt-marked texture. One of the best reviewed fine arts papers in the world.
Best for: fine art prints -
From Hahnemühle, this 100% cotton rag has no optical brighteners and instead accomplishes its brilliant whites by utilizing a layer of barium sulfate (which does not harm the longevity of the paper) while keeping its archival quality. It's 315gsm and notable for a smooth texture, a high gloss finish, and a slightly warm white tone with rich blacks.
Best for: black and white and color portraiture -
From Hahnemühle, this rag features a silvery high-gloss metallic finish with underlying natural whites and a smooth texture. Like, the baryta, it has no optical brighteners. It is 340 gsm and is acid-free, lignin-free, calcium carbonate buffered, and ISO 9706-compliant for archival quality prints.
Best for: images with metallic elements, high contrast, reflections, or striking visual elements
Aluminum Metal Prints
Aluminum metal prints, on industry leading Chromaluxe, are my go-to medium for most use cases— especially if you prefer an frameless look. Chromaluxe metal prints are incredibly durable, long lasting, and striking to behold.
These statement pieces are made through a dye sublimation process, transferring the image directly onto a white polyester coated aluminum sheet— permanently bonding the image to the metal. This is then sealed in further with a gloss or matte exterior finish, leaving an incredibly durable and scratch resistant image that can be cleaned with water and mild soaps without harming the image. Metal prints are known for their color enhancement and bright whites, similar to the backlighting you get on a computer or phone screen without the need for specialty lighting. In third party testing, in brighter than typical household conditions, Chromaluxe metal prints were rated to have no visible fading or changes in color balance for over 60 years.
These prints come with convenient float mounts, ready to hang— no framing necessary— and are very lightweight even at large sizes.
Luxury Acrylic Prints
Acrylic prints are among the newest innovations to come to the printing world. Exceptional quality printed images are affixed to an acrylic face, protecting the image from physical, atmospheric, and UV damage while providing stunning clarity, depth, and vibrancy that is impossible to achieve through other media. People often describe the image as appearing backlit or holographic through the acrylic face.
Like metal prints, these can be presented without frames with float mounts attached to the back of the print.
My Summa Forma limited edition prints take this medium to its pinnacle. A Lumachrome HD print is mated to a 3mm Trulife Antiglare coated acrylic face. The edges of the acrylic are diamond milled to a satin finish. An additional layer of acrylic is then affixed the the back of the image before the attachment of the float mount and French cleat hanger. This approach seals the image in on both sides, providing unmatched protection and longevity of the image. The antiglare coating ensures that the image shines with unmatched quality even in less than ideal lighting conditions while preserving the detail or eyepopping depth in the image. Due to the substantial cost of the materials alone, these measures are reserved for my most exclusive limited editions and are intended for collectors seeking only the highest level of luxury.
